Cambodia Reaffirms Stance to Promote a Conducive Environment for Myanmar Crisis Resolution

Cambodia, during its chairmanship of ASEAN in 2022, has made every effort to promote a conducive environment for resolving the crisis in Myanmar.

H.E. Kung Phoak, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and ASEAN SOM Leader of Cambodia, reaffirmed the Kingdom’s stance at a press conference here this morning on the outcomes of Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Prak Sokhonn’s participation in the 56th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) and Related Meetings in Jakarta, Indonesia recently.

Since the beginning, he said, Cambodia’s position was to create a conducive environment in which the next ASEAN chairs can rely on the progress we have achieved and continue to find more progress for Myanmar.

“Everyone must recognise the fact that the problem in Myanmar is time consuming, so what Cambodia is trying to do was to create a conducive environment not only for Cambodia, but also for other countries to use as a basis for new progress [in the resolution to Myanmar crisis],” he underlined.

In 2022, he recalled, Cambodia, as the ASEAN Chair, established the ASEAN Troika Mechanism which consists of the previous ASEAN chair, the current chair and the next chair to coordinate and monitor the implementation of the five-point consensus (5PC) with the main goal of helping Myanmar return to normalcy.

This is because Cambodia believes that the Myanmar issue is complex and requires a long-term solution, said H.E. Kung Phoak, adding that this is not a task that can be completed during the one-year term of the Special Envoy or during the one-term chairmanship of ASEAN. The unanimous issuance of the 5PC confirmed that all ASEAN members understand the complexities of this issue and also agreed to set a goal to help Myanmar.
